Writing Your Own Mountains and Rivers – A Nüshu Experience
📅 Date: 8th March 2025
📍 Location: Yi Crafts Studio, 60 Neasden Lane, London, NW10 2UW
⏰ Time: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
“I was born to be a mountain, not a stream; I seek to stand atop the peaks and look down upon the valleys of mediocrity.”
Inspired by the resilience and poetic beauty of Nüshu, the world’s only known script created and used exclusively by women, this workshop invites participants to explore the power of self-expression through language and art. Led by artist Jiayi Chen, you will learn the basics of Nüshu writing and create your own mountain and river-themed bookmarks, blending personal storytelling with traditional calligraphy.
On International Women’s Day, join our workshop and write our mountains and rivers together! Through this hands-on experience, we celebrate the strength and individuality of every voice—like mountains standing tall and rivers flowing freely. Join us in honoring this rare cultural heritage and crafting a piece of your own journey.
Jiayi Chen is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist whose work explores Nüshu, queerness, and resilience. As founder of The Great Her, she amplifies women’s stories through performance and cultural heritage.
No prior calligraphy experience is needed—just a love for culture, creativity, and community. Celebrate the power of women's voices through this rare and beautiful art form!
