Sashiko Jacket workshop at Kindred House in Margate

Screenshot 2021-07-01 at 10.40.08.png

Join YICRAFTS at Kindred House for a morning of slow, medative stitching, where you will experiment with sashiko embroidery on an indigo-dyed natual cotton jacket to take away with you.

Sashiko, meaning ‘little stab’, is the Japanese art of stitching beautiful patterns using running stitch, often used to add decorative and/or reinforcement, texture and warmth to cloth or old garments. First coming into existence in the Edo period, sashiko embroidery was first applied to clothing out of a practical need. Owing to the relatively cheap nature of white cotton thread and the abundance of indigo-dyed blue cloth in historical Japan, sashiko has a distinctive appearance of white-on-blue embroidery.

In this workshop, you will learn both the history and cultural background of sashiko stitch and try out different styles and patterns on your jacket. You will learn all the basic techniques and principle of the embroidery style, so you will be able to continue your practice at home.

All materials for the workshop, as well as refreshments will be provided.
