Yi彝 Traditional Waist Textile Belt

£98.00

This handwoven waist belt originates from the textile traditions of Southwest China -Yi ethic group where richly coloured woven bands are worn as part of ceremonial and everyday dress. Characterised by vivid red tones, layered fringe, and suspended metallic bead tassels, the piece carries both decorative and symbolic significance.

The central woven panel is created through traditional loom techniques, incorporating geometric motifs and rhythmic bands of colour associated with protection, vitality, and prosperity. Loose thread tassels extend organically from the sides, preserving traces of the weaving process and emphasising the handmade character of the textile.

At the lower edge, strands of silver-toned beads and multicoloured tassels introduce movement and sound when worn, transforming the object into both adornment and performance element. The combination of woven fibre, metallic detail, and asymmetrical fringe reflects the tactile richness of vernacular craft traditions.

Originally worn around the waist as part of layered dress, the piece can also be displayed as a textile object, wall hanging, or contemporary styling accessory. Each work retains subtle irregularities in weave, colour, and finish, making every piece unique.
