Based on Walter Plunkett’s unrealised design for the Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong in 1933’s ‘A Study for Scarlet’, this costume typifies Hollywood Orientalism of the era. The complex pattern contrasts a figure-hugging qipao centre, hand stitched with lace applique and sequins, with flowing 1.5m sleeves. The multi-tiered hat, constructed from felt blocking and buckram, completes the fantastical image. This costume is accompanied by the Extended Essay ‘Orientalism: The shifting images of China in Fashion and Film Costume from the 18thCentury to today’.

The original design is from Madame Grès’s Pagoda evening ensemble in 1935for Spanish dancer Argentina. During my reproduction, I started to explore communication from Eastern elements in Western country, and combination of East and West creating another space of beauty in clothing.

My first project to explore the possibility of combing my ethnic minority elements from China with Western costume cut. This is a myth in Bai minority group where I came from, which is about princess falling love with a hunter, and the hunter become a cloud at the end. I draw inspirations from Bai and then combine with western style to design and created this costume.
