This coaster is made from traditional Bai indigo tie-dyed cloth from Dali, Yunnan, crafted using a time-honoured resist-dyeing technique and finished with careful hand stitching.

The patterns are created through a hand-tied resist process: artisans pinch and bind small sections of fabric with thread before dyeing it in indigo. The tightly bound areas resist the dye, and when the threads are removed, delicate white motifs emerge from the deep blue surface. Each pattern forms organically through the dyeing process, giving the cloth its distinctive rhythm of dots and flowing lines.

This version is made using vintage indigo-dyed cloth, often referred to as “old cloth.” The fabric carries a slightly softer texture and subtle variations in colour from its previous life, adding depth and character that new textiles cannot replicate.

Each coaster is hand-cut and hand-stitched, preserving the integrity of the textile while turning it into a practical object for everyday use.

As every piece is handmade, minor variations of a few millimetres may occur. Due to the nature of traditional tie-dye and the use of vintage cloth, patterns and shades of indigo will vary slightly from the sample image, making each coaster a unique piece of craft heritage.
